Tips on great photography using your phone

For obvious reasons, we’re firm believers that content is king. The power of great content certainly shouldn’t be underestimated. Great content can inspire, excite and move, but contrary to popular belief, content goes far beyond a well-written blog post or web page. In today’s fast paced, technologically driven world, content is so much more.

Content is any information that’s presented and distributed with purpose, whether that’s as words or images. As the saying goes “a picture paints a thousand words”, which makes the use of pictures and videos important for every brand.

To capture the imagery that represents your business and the products or services it delivers, you don’t need the most expensive equipment. In fact, a smartphone with a good quality camera is the only tool required.

Capture beautiful imagery every time with our top tips for taking professional photos with your smartphone.

Use suitable lighting

Any photographer will tell you just how important lighting is, so make sure you know exactly how to use it when taking photos with your phone. Natural light is the holy grail, and you can utilise what Mother Nature gives you to play with shadow, create silhouettes or experiment with backlighting. Reflections can also be used to your advantage to ensure some seriously creative results.

Flash photography on the other hand is best avoided. If you absolutely have to turn on the flash, restrict it to daytime use.

Don’t zoom to start

Every smartphone worth its salt has a zoom function, but you don’t have to use it. Taking a photo, even from a distance, is better without zooming. Zooming simply lowers the resolution of the picture, making it blurry, grainy or pixelated.

Always take photographs without zooming in and crop later to ensure a no-compromise approach to quality.

Choose the right mode

The orientation of the image is another factor to consider with every shot. A portrait or landscape orientation may be more suitable for some subjects than others. Portrait mode for instance is great for close-ups, while landscape is ideal for more expansive, open scenes.

Invest in a tripod

If there’s one accessory you should invest in when taking great photography using a smartphone, it’s a tripod. Smartphone tripods are excellent investments, and ensure the stability needed to reduce noise and blurriness when capturing images or videos.

Practice, practice, practice

Practice makes perfect, especially when taking photos using a smartphone. Experiment with light, composition and orientation to ensure a picture-perfect finish that you are truly happy with.
